The biggest ‘wow’ moment of the night drive tonight was when we watched a male Springbok chase a rival down the riverbed with astonishing speed. We’re coming into Springbok breeding season now and the males will be establishing their dominance. Of course by doing it at night, under a full moon, they’ll end up drawing much attention to themselves and anyone can be watching. I once heard a statistic that during the Impala rut, 75% of animals eaten by large predators are male Impalas, because the common sense and vigilance that usually keeps them alive, seems to go out the window entirely…
