season 2006>
What are the essential requirements of a human
being? Water, food, shelter, love. The company of
others? Feeding the imagination? Well they’re
essential to me. I can’t live without them. And nor
should you. The imagination, after all, is a muscle
that enjoys playing games.
Theatre is both dangerous and infinite, a comfort
and a provocation. It can be risky, brave and
challenging and it’s got to be, if it wants to continue
as a living form. In 2006 we’re offering a rich and
exciting array of works that explore their themes with
subtlety, wit and passion, telling their stories in the
most truthful and expressive way possible. These
plays were written with the head and the heart and
they’re waiting to be experienced.
We can’t change the world - just the way you look at
it. I’m not sure where the road ends but I do know
where the journey begins - right here, right now.
Whether you’re looking for a provocation, a
challenge or just a bloody good night out, here at
State Theatre we want to push your buttons! So you
know what you have to do. Resistance is futile.

Investing in the State Theatre Company of South Australia helps
bring the inspiration of live theatre to the audiences and artists of
today and tomorrow. As an investor, you are part of our unfolding
story. With your support, we can enrich our cultural life with unique
and exceptional theatre, honour its traditions and break new
ground. It’s a gift to the future.
State Theatre Company is committed to ongoing Creative
Development and to the use of theatre to reflect the ever-changing
human condition. Taking risks is essential in creating new
Australian theatre work that’s relevant to the Here and Now, to
the audiences of today and to our communities.
As a result of this commitment, major works such as
Holy Day
and Night Letters have been performed on the main stage in
Adelaide and nationally. Both have been nominated for and
received numerous awards.
Under my Artistic Directorship, the Company maintains this focus
and will present
Honk If You Are Jesus from the pen of Peter
Goldsworthy - a modern champion of the lost art of storytelling -
during the 2006 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts. This marks the
Company’s first commission of a new work by an Adelaide writer
during my tenure as Artistic Director and I guarantee it’s going to
be an exciting world premiere production.
Going hand-in-hand with our commitment to the staging of new
works is our pledge to offer career development opportunities for
emerging South Australian artists. The role of a Director in main
stage theatre is uniquely isolated. Opportunities for professional
development in this industry are rare and increasingly difficult to
access for emerging artists. Through the appointment of Associate
Directors and the ongoing Assistant Director Scheme, State Theatre
Company continues to foster the creative excellence of a new
generation of theatre directors including former Creative F
ellowship
Recipients - Ursula Beaumont, Chris Drummond and Michael Hill.
Emerging actors, writers and designers are also supported through
our Acting Workshops, Creative Fellowships, Education and
Mentoring Programs.
We can’t do all this without your continued support - our
Subscribers, Donors, Patrons, Sponsors, Members of Dramatic
Women, Men at Work and, new in 2006, Doctors in Theatre - our
valued Company of Players (refer to page 40 for details). Your
donations directly support these creative endeavours. And we want
to do more to ensure that South Australia remains a vibrant and
thriving cultural hub all year round. Apart from the ballot box,
philanthropy is the one opportunity we have to express a
meaningful choice over the direction in which our society will
progress. So exercise that right!
Your support frees the theatre to be bold, risky and innovative
and helps restore the cutting edge to the work we do. State Theatre
Company plays, and must continue to play, a pivotal role in
promoting an exciting and diverse range of new voices. That’s
what keeps us alive and makes a real difference to our community.
Thank you for your support - it means so much to the artists of
this State. The rewards are immeasurable.

If You Are Jesus
T
his new stage adaptation of world-renowned South
Australian author Peter Goldsworthy’s seriously funny
novel defies categorisation and explodes expectations.
A biting black comedy, Honk If You Are Jesus pits science,
religion, innovation and ambition against each other in
an all-out brawl for ownership of the future.
Mara Fox is a medical research scientist who has spent
her life paying homage to the doctrines of scientific
method and observation. When she is hired by a religious
fundamentalist preacher to assist in the resurrection of the
extinct Tasmanian Tiger, she begins a journey that
unwittingly leads her to attempt the same for one very
well known, ancient religious figure.

DNA
-driven millennium, what Arctic of terrors or salvations
lies ahead?

acki Weaver, dazzling star of Australian film, television
and stage comes to Adelaide in this theatrical tour de
force that was a huge hit in both Sydney and Melbourne.
Everyone has their own story to tell about the day that
Rhonda Russell, deserted wife and mother, went berserk in
the shopping mall. And who's to know where the truth lies?
With the best friend who might have egged her on? The
husband who denies responsibility?
Or the victim's family whose lives were changed forever?
And then there’s the story of the Vengeful Redhead who’s
probably the least likely to know what really happened.
One of Australia’s finest and best loved actors, Weaver plays
seven wonderfully drawn and widely varying characters in
this not-to-be-missed theatre event.

wo of Adelaide’s finest comic actors, Paul Blackwell
and Stephen Sheehan, channel the spirits of Chaplin
and Keaton to bring to life one of the most infamous
duos in theatrical history.
Samuel Beckett’s forlorn tramps Vladimir and Estragon are
lost in time and space. Their shoes are falling apart, they’ve
only got turnips and carrots to eat and lately, unknown
attackers have been beating up Estragon on a nightly basis.
They abuse, amuse and console each other while they wait
for a man whose arrival promises both a job and perhaps
some kind of salvation.
In a theatrical revolution for the time, Beckett broke with
convention and created a truly unique work that defied the
accepted rules of dramatic structure. This landmark play is
a masterpiece of comic wordplay, but what lies beneath
is a lyrical layer of exquisite prose that explores
humankind’s search for meaning.

rom the playwright who delivered the smash-hit
comedy ‘Art’ to audiences the world over, comes
another brilliantly funny night in the theatre.
The Grand Chaos Theory is applied to a Parisian dinner-
party in Yasmina Reza's clever and elegant comedy of
manners.
Life x 3 shows how chance, with its impact upon our actions
and behaviour, can change everything. As a disastrous
dinner between two astrophysicists and their wives is played
out three times, with increasingly hilarious and unsettling
results, it’s a wicked pleasure to behold.
Reza is a star-reporter at the sex-war front and a sharp-
witted satirist of male pretension. The writing is brisk,
brittle and lethally accurate.

Gow directs a magical production of his iconic
Australian story.
It’s Christmas 1967 and following an end-of-year school
performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, three families
depart for their beach holidays, but their apparent seasonal
cheer masks deeper concerns.
Immigrants Harry and Vic love their adopted country, but
are faced with their son Tom’s terminal illness. Jim and
Gwen fret over their daughter Meg’s blossoming
independence and her friendship with the socially
unsuitable Tom. Roy is unable to console a grief stricken
Coral over the death of their only son in Vietnam.
But with the help of some Shakespearean fairies and a
spectacular storm, these families are reconciled and face
the future anew.
Griffin Theatre Company premiered
Away in January 1986.
Since then, audiences have been enthralled by this multi-
award winning play about the coming of age of both a
group of individuals and the country they live in.
