Greetings from the President of
Karate Canada
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Karate Canada
I would like to welcome (welcome back) everyone to
the 2024 Karate Canada National Championships to
be held in Laval, Quebec.
The 2023 Championship held in Laval featured
excellent facilities, competition venue and location
with the only difference in 2024 being an extra day
to accommodate the increased athlete registration
and to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. Karate
Quebec will once again co-host the event with Karate
Canada which has always resulted in excellent events.
The next edition of the WKF World Junior, Cadet and Under 21 Championships
will be held in October 2024 in Venice Italy. As always, the Karate Canada
National Championships will select the athletes that will represent Canada to
this important event. The National Championships is also important for
selecting the Senior National Team as we transition to a new format for
qualification to the WKF Senior World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, 2025.
The amateur sport world in Canada continues to evolve, and for the better. The
Safe Sport initiatives, now known as Abuse Free Sport, continue to influence
how Karate Canada conducts itself, how it expects athletes, coaches, and
officials to conduct themselves, and how we all treat each other. A key tenet of
Karate is that we begin, and end, with respect. This respect must not only be on
the tatami, but must also permeate how we conduct our affairs internationally,
nationally, provincially, and in our dojo's. Training (coaching, respect in sport,
ethical decision making etc.) is key in helping us achieve what, essentially we
should have been doing all along. Abuse in sport takes many avenues and many
forms, from the obvious, to the very subtle. We must continue to stand against
any and all forms of abuse in sport and to continue to educate ourselves to
recognize that behaviours we may once saw as innocent, or acceptable, truly
are not.
I look forward to seeing new and returning athletes, coaches and officials in
Laval where we will once again celebrate the love of our sport and witness the
best of Canadian karate in the spirit of competition and Abuse Free Sport.
Sincerely,
Craig Vokey
President
Karate Canada
Greetings from the President of
Karate Quebec
It is with great pleasure that Karate Québec's
Board of Directors and Organizing
Committee welcomes athletes and families
to Laval's Place Bell for a second
consecutive year for Karaté Canada's
National Championships, July 4-7, 2024.
Building on last year's experience, we've put
all our efforts into making this event a great
success.
For those of you who are visiting Laval for
the first time, you'll find that Place Bell is a
great venue for sporting events of all kinds. Much more than just the
home arena of the Laval Rocket, Montreal Canadiens' feeder club, Place
Bell is a multi-sport venue located in the heart of Laval, surrounded by
hotels, restaurants and a variety of shops, allowing you to take part in a
variety of family activities.
The July 2024 Championships will select the best of Canadian athletes
who will go on to become part of Team Canada. The entire team looks
forward to seeing you in Laval for these Championships.
Best of luck to all,
François Désormeaux

i
APPENDIX 1 –WILD CARD SYSTEM
Karate Canada member PTSOs will receive an allocation of wildcards
directly related to the size of the teams that each registers for the
Championships.
The Wildcard system helps to address several potential issues, such as
teams from provinces with larger populations that may have three or four
top performers in one division. This also allows top performing athletes
who move from one province / territory to another mid-selection process, or
top performing athletes who were forced to miss crucial provincial /
territorial selection events due to illness, injury or due to the demands of
the international calendar, to have an avenue for entry into the National
Championships that may otherwise be closed to them.
This has no detrimental effect on the selection process that PTSOs adopt for
the selection of their own teams leading up to the 2024 National
Championships. It is simply an additional option that provides more
flexibility to the PTSOs and the opportunity to register additional athletes
that each PTSO feels has the skill level required to compete in the National
Championships and / or might derive a benefit from participation.
ALLOCATION RATIOS:
Wildcard allocations will be as follows:
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Selection of athletes for registration in the 2024 National Championships
through the “Wildcard” system will be left to the discretion of each PTSO

, along with a written
confirmation that each of these athletes meets

territorial team selections in that individual kumite division (excluding
automatically invited athletes); or
2.
The athlete has placed 5th in the final rankings of the 2023-24 provincial /
territorial team selections in that individual kumite division (excluding
automatically invited athletes), and the 4th place athlete in the same division
has previously been offered the wild card and has declined it; or
3.
The athlete has placed 5th in the final rankings of the 2023-24 provincial /
territorial team selections in that individual kata division (excluding
automatically invited athletes); or
4.
Or the athlete has placed 6th in the final rankings of the 2023-24 provincial /
territorial team selections in that individual kata division (excluding
automatically invited athletes), and the 5th place athlete in the same division
has previously been offered the wild card and has declined it.
(Exceptional nominations of wildcards falling outside the criteria listed
above may exceptionally be considered on a case-by-case basis.
However, the general spirit of the criteria listed above will be respected
in approving or rejecting such nominations.)
Only athletes who are members of their PTSO, who meet at least one of
the four criteria listed above, and whose names are submitted to Karate
Canada by the appropriate PTSO authority (President, Executive Director
or Team Head Coach)
no later than May 31
st
, 2024
will be eligible to
compete at the 2024 National Championships as wildcards. Karate
Canada will review all submitted wildcard nominations and will confirm
