Candidate Spotlight
Anyone seeking political office is invited and
encouraged to announce their candidacy in the
Candidate Spotlight. It is an opportunity to tell the voters
why you are running, goals if elected, etc. It is not a forum
for bashing an opponent, and there is no charge.
Ken Carroll is a new face at
Parsons of Crandon
Ken Carroll is now handling the financing at
Parsons of Crandon. Carroll has lived in Cavour for about
20 years and has considerable experience in the car
business. He shares his life with wife Lindy and their seven
month old daughter Reagan. Ken is on the left in the
picture.
He is joined in the photo with Richie Kulaf, center,
and Amy Krause. Richie is in his 25th year with Parsons.
Amy Krause, far right, is a fifteen-year employee
of Parsons. Amy is leaving Parsons to take over the family
business, Wilson's Drive-In, just down the road a ways from
Parsons.
Good luck to Ken and Amy in their new pursuits.
Let your true colors shine at the Second Annual
Colors of Cancer 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, May 2, at
10 a.m. at the historic Crandon International Off-Road
Raceway. Last year over 500 people took part in the
inaugural event.
This fun event honors our friends and neighbors
who struggle
to cross the finish line in their daily battles
with cancer, and benefits Ties That Bind Us of Forest
County, a local group partnered with Ministry Health Care
and the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation.
The Colors of Cancer 5K Run and Walk is an
entertaining, untimed experience, and runners will be
showered with colored powder at five stations along the
route. The event caters to families and 5K enthusiasts
alike. Prizes will be given out for best costumes after the
run!
The cost to enter this exciting event is $30 (if
received by April 1), $35 (after April 1), $15 for age
18 and
under, $75 for families, and cancer survivors are free.
Packet pickup will be Friday, May 1, from 2 - 6 p.m. at the
front entrance of Ministry Medical Group in Crandon,
located at 400 West Glen Street, or on race day at the
Crandon International Off-Road Raceway, located
at 10104
U.S. 8, Crandon.
Register your family today by contacting Kadie
Montgomery at 715.478.3318.

Submitted by School Dist. of Laona
The School District of Laona must continue to
remain current and adapt to the needs of our students and
community. Each year as part of the State Budget,
schools are notified of their revenue limit, or the amount of
money they can spend. Over
the past eight years our
revenue limit has decreased by $295,000. We are proud
that even with a smaller revenue limit, we have been able
to continue to provide a variety of opportunities for our
students.
One area we have continued to be a leader in is
technology. Thanks to
our teachers writing a variety of
grants, we have received over $35,000 to purchase iPads
and Chromebooks for our students. We have also used a
variety of donations and grants to purchase classroom
technology enhancements like Smartboards, document
cameras, projectors and equipment for our distance
learning class.
The other area
we have continued to support
through district funds is building and grounds
maintenance. We have spent over $280,000 in the past
four years. We have installed new doors, security system,
boilers, water heater and phone system. We have
improved our softball and baseball fields and increased
our wireless capabilities.
These
purchases and improvements have been
made possible by the conservative fiscal management of
the school district and school board. The projected
referendum will allow us to continue to be a leader in
education and keep a quality facility for our students and
community.

The first rehearsal for the talent show was a huge
success and a lot of fun. This year the popular show Hee
Haw” will be coming toTownsend.
We are still looking for the many talented people
out there that like to entertain. If you can sing, dance, play
instruments or
can crack simple jokes (Hee Haw style)
please join us on the 3rd of April for our second rehearsal.
We will be meeting at the Townsend Townhall at 6:00 p.m.
The show will take place on the 25th of April for
two shows. at 1:30 and 7:00 p.m.
The Town
Hall Players donate the proceeds to the
Food Pantry at St. John's church. Through the years, we
have given them thousands of dollars for this cause. This
is the time of year when their supplies run low. So even if
you have never seen our show or been in it, please
come
and join us for a fun time.
For questions, call Sue Rapp at 715-276-7317 or
Ruth Benoit 715-276-9563.

Doris Lovrine-Candidate for
Hiles Town Supervisor
I am currently one of the Town Supervisors. I
replaced a retiring supervisor seven years ago and have
been re-elected since then. I’ve retired from being an
active fire fighter but still am with Hiles North as a First
Responder.
I worked for Milwaukee County in the Personal
Dept. for 14
years and with Johnson Wax for four years
which gave me experience working with people in a
multitude of situations.
My majors were in Psychology and Business
Adminstration. I also took accounting in college. I’ve
been the treasurer of a very active club for over 30 years.
Forty years ago,
I decided I wanted to have a sled
dog team and moved here. Since I no longer work full time
and now only have one dog, I’ve had more time to devote to
working for the Town and in other local endeavors.
Since I’ve been on the Board, we have always
worked to keep taxes as low as possible while still
maintaining the town needs, keeping up about 100 miles of
roads and working with the town people.
The northern section is physically separated from
the main part of the town due to thousands of acres of
national forest. As a
resident in this area, I am able to bring
ideas and concerns to the other two board members at
every meeting. I would like to continue in this position in
order to keep the dialogue going and a physical
connection between the two areas.
I would appreciate your vote in the
April election.
Doris Lovrine
I have been a full time resident for seven years
and a summer resident for many more, and it would be a
privilege to represent you at the town board level. This is a
wonderful and diverse town with many different folks and
cultures living together
in God's Country. While some of
you were born and raised here in Forest County, many
others including Laurie and I, worked hard to achieve our
dream of living here in the Town of Lincoln. Where else
can you still enjoy the serenity of the lakes and woods, the
camaraderie of great friends and neighbors, and the
conveniences of so many great businesses?
My past experiences, including Forest County
supervisor Dist. 16, managing a tool and die shop, building
two small business and many other endeavors, have
helped me deal with adversity. I understand the position of
Supervisor is to
represent YOU, conduct due diligence on
the issue or issues at hand, listen, debate, and vote. I will
not represent any other third party and will put the wishes
of the electorate first.
I would appreciate your vote and support. I
believe in open, honest, and transparent government.
Steve Bunda-Candidate for
Town of Lincoln Supervisor
This robin showed up at Rollingstone Lake last
week. We always look at the arrival of these birds as a
harbinger of spring, but after listening to the forecast of
snow at the time of this writing, it might be that we are just
being made happy by the dumb
robins who come too soon!
I am running for Supervisor in the Town of
Nashville, and I want openness in our town business
operations. I would like to represent all the people of this
township.
I was raised here and went to Mole Lake Grade

Laona School Fun Day
The Laona School District will be holding a School Fun Day on
April 14th. Parents are encouraged to bring their children who

ROOFS & HOME-
OWNERS INSURANCE
COVERAGE
Over the last several
years, insurance
companies have become
very "picky" regarding
roof conditions. There
has been some extreme
weather throughout the
United States, which
means a lot of pay-outs.
Homeowner's insurance
policies are generally
based on replacement
cost and if it costs
$10,000
to fix your hail
damaged roof, your
company would pay that
amount even if your
shingles were 18 years
old and you should have
replaced them as part of
your normal household
maintenance. So,
insurance companies are
changing their
coverages and some of
them are now requiring a
minimum $1,000
deductible. Other
companies are doubling
your deductible if you
have wind or hail claim.
And some companies
are paying actual cash
value or depreciating
your roof value based on
age. One company has
a percentage payout if
your roof is over 16
years old. Check with
your agent and
review
your coverages. Don't
say your roof isn't
leaking, so it must be
okay.

Mayor Rosa proclaims this
week "Surveyor's Week"
On March 17th, Crandon Mayor Dennis Rosa
proclaimed the week Surveyor's Week in Crandon,
presenting the proclamation to surveyors Jamie Anderson
and Jeff DeMuth. Both work for MSA Professional
Services based in Rhinelander.
U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, all surveyors, recognized
this profession’s necessity for the organized
development
of this country. In addition to determining boundaries,
today’s surveyors continue to play an essential role in the
design of all infrastructure, including roads, bridges,
utilities and site development. The City of Crandon is
joining the nation in recognizing the value of this
profession by proclaiming March 15-21, 2015
National
Surveyors Week in Crandon.
Crandon Mayor Dennis Rosa presented the City
of Crandon proclamation to Jeff DeMuth, PLS, and
President of the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors
(WSLS) and Jamie Anderson a surveyor/engineer from
Crandon. DeMuth is a Professional Land Surveyor and
both work for MSA Professional Services, Rhinelander.
Today’s
surveyors utilize sophisticated
technology to perform accurate measurements, research
records, reduce data and prepare maps and plans that
show the results of the survey. WSLS President Jeff
Above, Mayor Rosa presents the proclamation to Jeff DeMuth
(center) and Jamie Anderson (right)
DeMuth said, “Surveyors are like detectives who analyze
evidence, diplomats who resolve differences between
arguing neighbors, experts in translating regulations and
legal documents, and a security to land owners by
providing protection to their property, their rights and their
investment. On top of all that, we’re very good at
measuring.”
The
City’s proclamation recognizes professional
land surveyors, and the important work they do for our
communities and state. Citizens of Rhinelander are
encouraged to reflect on the historical contributions of
surveying and the new technologies that are constantly
modernizing this honored profession.
For more information about surveying, contact
Jeff DeMuth at [email protected]

Town of Wabeno Chairman
As a lifetime resident of Wabeno and 10
years of experience as Tow n of Wabeno
supervisor, I find that as a current Wabeno Town
Board Member you can’t focus on one or two
things as far as what you want to accomplish
within your term on the Wabeno Town Board.
There are many things that can arise at one time or
another that will need to be addressed and
followed through.
A few areas I would like to address are:
Communication We need to better our
communication as a Town Board before we can
get the communication among our town workers
and town people. We need to work together and
do what’s in the best interest of the Town of
Wabeno.
Accountability I have been striving to better
the accountability whether it’s a town employee or
town official. I have made up and brought an
example of a Performance
Evaluation to the Board
some time ago. I would not only like to get that
implemented but would also like see updated
personnel records and up dated policies &
procedures for all town workers.
Local Businesses/Tourism - I will continue
my efforts on making our town an enjoyable,
clean, and safe place
not only for our town people
and local businesses, but for the tourists that
come to or through the Town of Wabeno.
If elected as Town of Wabeno Chairman, I
will take my responsibility very serious. I have
proven to be a very strong voice as Town of
Wabeno
Supervisor in the last 10 years and
believe our town people put their trust in me to
make sure their concerns are looked after.
I am a hard working individual that has the
experience, enthusiasm, energy, and skills to be
the next Town of Wabeno Chairman. I will
continue to
do what’s in the best interest of
Wabeno. I ask for your support and vote in the
April 7, 2015 election.
Elect Steve Bunda
Supervisor Town of Lincoln
As a candidate for office in the Town of
Lincoln I want to state that I believe in Trust, Truth
and Transparency in government.
If elected, I promise to serve with
Fortitude, Integrity, Intelligence and Courage
when facing contentious issues.
If elected, I will serve with Honesty, be
Independent, and I promise
to Represent the
citizens of the Town of Lincoln to the best of my
ability.
I am asking you, the voters of the Town of
Lincoln, for your support in the upcoming election
for Town Board.

our township. I want to make this a better place to live for all
of us. I would also
like our children and grandchildren to
have a great place to grow up in and to enjoy.
I had my own contracting business for many years

Continued from page 1
I am a lifetime resident of Goodman. I am a proud
father of three children and three grandchildren.
After graduating from G.A.H.S. in 1963, I attended N.W.T.C.
in Green Bay. I served in the Army from 1965 through 1968.
Upon returning home, I was a deputy sheriff from
Marinette County for
approximately 10 years. I served
several years with the Marinette County Economic Board.
My hobby now is cooking, helping the needy and
helping with the many fund raising events.
As your town chairman, I will devote most of my
time and skills to keeping Goodman a safe and clean place
to live and work. I will strive to welcome and attract new
business, as well as helping our present businesses,
which will keep and attract new families and people to our
area.
Please vote April 7, 2015 for me.
George A. Buck -Candidate for
Goodman Town Chairman
My name is Linda Adamczyk and I am seeking re-
election for the position of Townsend Town Clerk. I would
appreciate your vote of confidence on April 7th.
Linda Adamczyk -Candidate for
Townsend Town Clerk
I am running for Town Supervisor. My wife
Michelle and I have been raised in Wabeno and have
raised 5 children of our own. We have an established
business here, Smith Concrete, and currently employ 13
area residents. I would like to be part of the future
decisions facing
our town.
I have no political experience but sometimes that
is a positive thing. I will do what is in the best interest of the
town and its residents.
Vote Jim Smith on April 7th.
My name is Jim Smith and I am running for
School Board. My wife Michelle
and I graduated for
Wabeno ourselves, graduated 2 adult children, and
currently have 3 children attending Wabeno schools.
I have owned and ope rated a successful
business in the Wabeno area for the last 25 years. I hope
to use the skills of running a business to help in the
hard
decisions facing our school.
We have become a Title 1 Focus School because
of our declining test scores. I would like to help in
analyzing and fixing that problem before we start losing
financial aid and need to raise taxes to make up for that
gap. I would
like to be informed and would like to keep the
parents and other community members about the
progress of our children’s education. I think I would do
that best on the board. The education of the children of
the district will be my #1 concern.
Your vote will
be appreciated on April 7th.

Wholesale/Retail Dealer for
New Radiators, Heater Cores & Gas Tan k s
My name is Steve Ashbeck and I am running for a
seat on the Wabeno School Board. I am a lifelong resident
of Wabeno. I graduated from Wabeno High School in 1990.
My son graduated in 2011 and my daughter still attends
Wabeno School District. I have been a Forest County
Deputy Sheriff for 14 years. My wife and I also own two
local businesses, Flowers Galore and ZK Trucking.
Instead of listing promises or things I would
change, I think it would be more beneficial to explain what I
believe a school board should represent and what I
believe my role
would be as a school board member.
First and foremost, a school board needs to be
fiscally responsible while still providing the best education
and opportunities to the students.
A school board should be receptive to students,
parents, staff and the community, offering a response and
open dialog during board
meetings and a board member
should always be accessible and open minded, and leave
personal feelings or biases out of all decision making.
The school board should take input from any
individual or any group and consider all the facts when
making any decision, big or small. As a school board
member, I would be a trustee of the community that elects
me. I would be accessible and more than willing to
collaborate with all members of the community, staff, and
other board members. A school board member should
also advocate for our schools and our students, in turn
building public
trust, support and encouraging
interaction. A school board should provide open
interaction with all citizens, students or groups that come
before them. I believe everyone who comes before the
board has a right to be heard and responded to.
There are a lot of factors that come into play when
running
a school district. The key for a school board is to
create a long term vision for the students, the school and
the school’s role in the community.
Funding is obviously a big concern. We just
passed a large operating referendum. I want to avoid
having to pass another one
anytime soon. I am not
opposed to referendums if, and only if, all other options
have been exhausted. I know the public can see the
budget, but I also believe when proposing a referendum,
the board should provide a detailed mapping of where we
overspent, where we fell short and what
the detailed plan
is with the money we will receive from the referendum. I
understand about state and federal budget cuts to a
school district, but if we were financially stable with our
prior decisions, we would be able to sustain any further
budget cuts without a referendum.
We need
to focus on short and long term funding
and the security of Wabeno School District. We need to
figure out why student’s state test scores are still
declining, why we have become a ‘Focus School’ and why
teachers and students want to leave our district. This all
plays a part in
our budget.
I would like to focus on promoting Wabeno
Schools on all levels; academics, extr a curricular
activities, athletics, teacher and student achievements
etc.
The board is responsible for establishing and
maintaining a structure that supports a successful vision
(both academically and financially), empowers the staff,
and provides leadership.
We are a diverse community and
we need to embrace that fact. Not only are we diverse in
race and culture, we are also diverse in our views, our
beliefs and our experiences. We are here to serve the
educational needs of all children. If we are to be
successful,
we must all work together in this endeavor to
make a better school district and provide the best
opportunities and education for our students.
I believe that we have tremendous teachers and
staff working with our children throughout the district. A
school board’s responsibility is to enhance and enrich
what
goes on in a classroom. We must re-establish morale
amongst all district employees, and work together to be a
successful school. It is a board’s duty to provide
opportunities to our students and help them reach their
fullest potential as well as provide the necessary tools a
teacher needs to help
their students achieve.
As a resident, parent, business owner and police
officer, my running for the School Board will allow me to
work and advocate for the education of all children in our
district and facilitate for a stronger connection between
our schools and our communities.
By giving our stakeholders; teachers,
students,
parents and community members, their voices back and
collaborating with each other, we will build a strong district
where students want to open enroll into, teachers want to
work and retire from and community members want to be
involved with.
I ask for your support on April 7th because
IT IS
TIME FOR A CHANGE.
Steve Ashbeck-Candidate for
Wabeno School Board
CONT. FROM PG 6
My name is Tim Warrner and I am a candidate for
the Wabeno School Board. I have resided in the
Lakewood area since 1991, and my wife Theresa and I
have three daughters. Our oldest is a graduate of WHS
and is currently attending Nicolet College. Our other two
daughters
are students at WHS, one is a sophomore the
other is in 8th grade. I graduated from the University of
Wisconsin Madison with a B.A., and am currently
employed by Aruze Gaming America as their Midwest
Branch Manager. I have served on the board of the Lakes
County Public Library,
and the Oconto County Library
Board. I also volunteer as an assistant golf coach for the
Laona/Wabeno Golf Team.
As an advocate for the Wabeno School District I
would like to continue to see our schools prepare our
young people for the jobs of the future. Our district is
currently
meeting standards, but we can do better. We lag
behind the rest of the state in reading and math
achievement. I support the district's realistic and
attainable goals of increasing both math and reading
proficiency by 5% this year. I will support the teachers by
giving them the tools
they need to achieve those goals.
Technology in our classrooms is critical for our
students’ success. While there is no substitute for a great
teacher, technology can enhance our children’s
education by facilitating in dividual learning plans,
connecting them with outside instructional sources, and
opening up partnerships with local colleges and
businesses
for advanced classes and/or internships. We
need to provide our teachers training and support as new
technology enters our classrooms. Furthermore,
technology can connect our parents and community
members with our schools to make sure they are informed
and engaged stakeholders, because a strong school
district benefits us all,
not just our kids.
The Wabeno Area District stands at a unique
crossroads. Small rural districts like ours will no doubt
face challenges ahead, but with collaborative leadership
on the district level, we can find solutions to those
challenges and remain focused on promoting student
growth and achievement in the years
to come. I would
appreciate your support in the election on April 7th.

By Dale Keller
Ceanne is the daughter of Pat and Dale Harrison.
She has two siblings, Clayton and her twin brother Colby.
Her favorite subjects in school are English and Art. She is
involved in many extracurricular activities such as,
basketball, volleyball and track. She has been a very
successful volleyball and basketball player throughout
high school. She was named player of the year for the
conference in basketball, and first team all-conference in
volleyball. She is admired by her classmates, and was
elected as their class president. She is a leader!
Outside of school, Ceanne enjoys reading,
writing,
drawing, and hanging with her friends. Her favorite
movie of all time is the Breakfast Club, or any movie with
Molly Ringwald in it. Someday, she would like to
personally meet the president. However, Ceanne’s most
admired person in her life is her father. She said, “He has
been a strong positive influence in every aspect of her life.”
After graduation, Ceanne will attend the UW-
Superior, studying towards a degree in writing with a minor
in communications. Writing is a very large part of her life.
Her career goal is to become a journalist and a freelance
writer.
She also loves to travel, and dreams of visiting Paris,
France.
Mr. Keller, who is Ceannes’ art teacher, says,
“Ceanne is inventive, imaginative and a hard worker. Each
artwork she creates is patiently made and completed with
great care. It is obvious to me that she takes great pride in
her work. Her artwork is very genuine and extraordinarily
beautiful. I can see that she has a personal attachment in
what she creates, and it clearly shows in every piece of her
art. I can plainly see she has a creative voice; it is truly what
makes her art a
pleasure to see and experience. Ceanne is
an amazing young woman who displays a wide range of
talents. She is an outstanding student, a gifted artist and
perhaps, most importantly, a delightful person. Ceanne
embraces challenges and seeks opportunities to make our
world a better place.”

Wabeno
Student of
the Week
The Student of the Week for March 16-20 is
Courtney Schaefer. She was selected by Mr. Nygard for
her outstanding work in mathematics and her involvement
in school activities.
Courtney lives in Wabeno and is a Junior at
Wabeno High School. She is the daughter of Tammi and
Jeff Ferrington
of Wabeno, and Jeff and Joy Schaefer of
Oshkosh. She has two siblings; 20 year old brother Jeff
Schaefer, and 7 year old brother Brady Ferrington. Her
favorite relative is Aunt Sandi Schuhart because she does
anything Courtney asks of her.
Courtney is involved in many activities, but she
loves to play sports. She plays volleyball, basketball, and
softball for Wabeno High School. Courtney has been
selected to the all-conference teams in volleyball,
basketball, and softball. She say her favorite things about
school are Math and talking with her friends. Courtney is a
hard working student and is
thinking of becoming an
athletic trainer after she graduates. She hasn’t decided
yet where she’s going to go to college to pursue her goal.
She thought it was “pretty cool” to be selected as the
Student of the Week.
Courtney doesn’t have one favorite song or band,
but likes a
variety of different music. Her favorite color is
orange and she likes the game Quelp. Her favorite movie
is Matilda and her favorite book is “You Against Me” by
Jenny Downham.
Courtney loves to laugh and enjoys a good joke,
funny story or video. Her hero is her
mom, because like
her aunt, her mom will do anything for her. She would like
to thank her parents for making her into the person she is
today.
Congratulations Courtney on being selected
Student of the Week.

When you choose foods at the grocery store, do
you often check the Nutrition Facts label on the
packaging? If so, you probably select healthier foods than
people who don't.
Many packaged or processed foods with food
labels tend to have large amounts of sodium.
Manufacturers add
sodium during processing for many
reasons and in many forms. In fact, over 70% of the
sodium we eat comes from processed foods.
But, not all processed foods have high sodium
content. For example, frozen vegetables without sauce,
canned fruits, milk and eggs are often lower in sodium
even though they
are processed. How will you know for
sure? The Nutrition Facts label will tell you how much
sodium is in a serving of a packaged food. Better choices
can lead to better health!
Beware of Bread
The biggest source of sodium in the Americnan
diet is not salty snacks. According to
CDC, it is the bread
you toast in the morning and use for sandwiches at other
meals. One slice of bread can have as much as 100 to 200
mg of sodium or 15% of the recommended amount for
people over 51 years of age. Look for alternatives like thin
sliced
bread and open-faced sandwiches. Flour tortillas
used for wraps are not any better. An eight-inch tortilla can
have as much as 450 mg of sodium. Have you checked the
sodium on the label of your bread?

Congratulations Cole!

We would like to thank the EMTs and all professional staff at

To Andrea and all the staff at Schmidt Schulta Funeral Home,

Pastor Schram, thank you for your wonderful words and to
the ladies of St. Paul Lutheran Church for the delicious meal.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our
family and friends who
came to visit with us, sent cards, food, flowers and
for your prayers. We hope that we have not missed anyone. Words
cannot say how much your thoughtfulness is appreciated.
The Lord has gained another angel in heaven, who will be
missed by many on earth. God's blessings to all,
Rose, John, Tess, Terri and Joe
As the parents of Joe, Jean and I would like to
thank all of those in our community and the all of the
surrounding communities for coming forward with
supportive condolences for our tragic loss. Be it
flowers, cards, calls, joining us for the service, hugs,
words of comfort or
prayer, it all meant so much to us.
The tremendous amount of support our
family has received has been very comforting,
especially to Jean and me. You all knew Joe. He loved
life, he loved his young family, he loved all his
extended family, and he loved his many friends.
He
was a man who was intelligent and strong. There was
no malicious intent behind this act. Joe had been
fighting a dual battle.
The strong medication he was on did a fair
job of keeping his colitis disease in check. A decade
of fighting colitis lead to his
depression. Joe was a
quiet person. He kept all of this to himself, as he didn't
want to burden anyone with his issues. He felt he
could handle the depressive disorder on his own,
which is the mind set of most men. The point is, Joe
did not seek
treatment.
Moving forward with all of our lives, Jean and
I feel we must make something good come of this act.
Depression is a disease that took Joe's life. Yes,
prayer helps, but treatment is a must. Depressive
disorders are real and treatable. They are no more a
sign
of weakness than cancer, diabetes, or any other
serious illness.
In our country, some 30,000 people die of
suicide each year. Seventy percent of them suffered
from a depressive disorder, and most will not seek
treatment. Most men are good at hiding the symptoms
until it is too late.
If we
can learn anything from this, it is that real
men do get real depression. Please seek help, or if you
know of friends and loved ones who suffer from
depression, encourage them to get help. Don't
become another victim of suicide and let us not have
another tragic and hurtful
event occur in our
communities.
Thank You, Cal Peters.
The Suicide Victim

One in three people will be diagnosed with
cancer in their lifetimes, and the other two will know
someone who is. We often show support for loved ones by
wearing ribbons in colors that represent particular kinds of
cancer. Although the type of cancer that affects each of us
may be
different, we are united in honoring and supporting
people with cancer. The Colors of Cancer 5K Run and Walk
is an opportunity to work together to build awareness,
offer encouragement and raise funds to beat cancer in
Forest County. Wear your “Colors of Cancer” T-shirt on
race day to show
your support, and show off your own
colors of cancer while crossing the finish line.
The mission of Ties That Bind Us is to provide
cancer prevention education and build a network of
community volunteers to help local Forest County
residents with the burdens of cancer. Ties That Bind Us is
a
local organization which was started to give back to the
community members of Forest County. Ties That Binds Us
is in partnership with the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation
and is not-for-profit. Ministry Medical Group in Crandon
and the James Beck Cancer Center are also helping with
the initiative. “Our goal
is to put dollars raised directly back
into the community,” said event organizer Kadie
Montgomery. “This year we have been able to provide gas
cards, nutritional supplement, and support groups. Also,
partnered with other organizations to provide community
event focused on cancer prevention education to the
community.”
If you or someone
you know has cancer and
needs assistance, or if you would like to make a
contribution or volunteer, please contact Kadie
Montgomery via email at

The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands
was established in 1848 by Article 10 of the Wisconsin
Constitution. The BCPL manages the Common School
Fund, which was created in the Constitution as a
permanent endowment to
benefit public education.
The BCPL generates earnings for the Common School
Fund by investing in community projects across the state
through the State Trust Fund Loan Program. Trust Fund
earnings are distributed annually to public schools and
are the sole source of state funding for public school
libraries. For many school
districts, this is the only money
available for library materials including books,
newspapers and periodicals, web-based resources, and
computer hardware and software. The funds distributed
today are enough to put a book in the hand of every child
in Wisconsin.
In a joint statement, Commissioners Schimel, La
Follette and Adamczyk said,
"Thanks to BCPL investments
in local projects throughout the state, communities
receive support for economic development projects,
public infrastructure improvements, and the purchase of
capital equipment and vehicles. Many of these
expenditures provide law enforcement personnel and first
responders with the equipment needed to keep their
communities safe. The fact that
earnings from BCPL
investments continue to benefit public school libraries
167 years after statehood would make the founding
fathers of Wisconsin immensely proud. Schools and
communities benefit from this investment, and the BCPL
is pleased to distribute record Common School Trust
Fund earnings in 2015.”
This 2015 library aid distribution is
the largest in
the long history of the BCPL. In an era of historically low
interest rates, BCPL commissioners are proud to have
maintained stable earnings distributions.

Spring has sprung! With the rapid disappearance of the snow piles many of us are
getting excited for doing some spring cleaning of dead leaves, pine needles, and brush on
our properties. The warmer weather that melts the snow, brings back the robins, and
awakens the frogs also creates the risk
of wildfires to spread. Early springs, like the one we
are experiencing, often result in higher wildfire risk.
Year after year, the number one reason wildfires are started in Wisconsin is from
debris burning that got out of control. The DNR urges everyone to be safe and take some
precautions that may prevent small brush fires from becoming damaging wildfires and
remember to get your annual burning permit before doing any burning.
Unless the ground is completely snow covered, and with the exception of campfires
and cooking fires, burning permits are required for all open burning including ground
burning, burn
barrels, and incinerators. No burning permits are required within the city of
Crandon.
Burning permits are FREE and required by law. Having the DNR come to put your
escaped fire out can be extremely costly so don’t get caught burning without a permit!
There are now a variety of ways to
obtain a burning permit:
Visit http://dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits/ to print one out instantly
Visit one of our local Emergency Fire Wardens (EFWs) to have one issued instantly.
The list of Forest County EFWs can be found here:
http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/ForestFire/emergFireWardens.asp
Call 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) to have one issued over the phone and sent in
the
mail
Visit the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station at 4978 Hwy 8 West in Laona (715-674-
4481)
Visit the WI DNR Ranger Station at 404 N. Lake Ave. in Crandon (715-478-3717)
Before burning you must verify current fire danger and burning restrictions for the
day of the burn by visiting
dnr.wi.gov/wisburn or calling 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876). Days
and times the burning is allowed changes daily based on current weather conditions so it is
important to check before every burn.
When burning, it is important to keep fire-fighting tools such as a water hose and shovel
close at hand in case the
fire gets out of control. The fire should be monitored at all times
until it is completely out and cold to the touch. All it takes is one ember to start a wildfire.
If the fire starts to expand beyond the planned area, producing large flames and lots
of
smoke, call your local fire department immediately!
For alternatives to burning, please see: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/openburning/
Be safe out there, folks! Hopefully the next time you see our fire trucks will be in the
parade and not to put out your escaped fire! Happy spring!!
Please contact DNR staff at the Crandon Ranger
Station for more information at
715-478-3717.
BURNING PERMITS REQUIRED
On Feb. 24th, Mr. Garvaglia of the Laona School
District took his Pre-Calc class and 4 other seniors on a field
trip to the Oldenburg Group manufacturing plant in Iron River,
MI. Upon our arrival, we were introduced to Fritz Wenzel, VP
of Engineering for the Oldenburg Group, our tour
guide. Fritz
has been with the Oldenburg Group for better than 15 years
and has extensive knowledge of its operations.
Our tour started with the Engineering Department
where Frank Ciulini, a design engineer with 20+ years of
experience at OGI, demonstrated what he was working on
and answered questions the students
had. This was a great
experience for students looking to go into the engineering
field to see actual, hands-on how engineers work in a
manufacturing environment.
Our tour continued into the machine shop where
CNC milling and drilling, plasma cutting of parts, and
industrial welding is performed. The students
got to witness
a CNC drill in operation where students from area colleges
were attending doing a time study on the CNC drill. Students
who have a high interest in the welding field got to see some
high-end welding that was happening and ask welders
questions.
The Oldenburg Group is
a marine defense sub-
contractor with interests in the nations Navy shipyards.
While on the tour the students were treated to doors and a lift
system for the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) being built at
Marinette Marine in Marinette, WI. These doors and lift
system were large enough for a
small sub or ship to enter and
be lifted into the ship. As Fritz explained this lift system will be
used by our Navy Seals, reconnaissance missions, and
rescue operations.
Also in the marine defense area, the students were
able to see an all aluminum turret being built that when
completed will be an extendable ramping system attached to
the back of a Navy ship. This ramp will have the ability to
rotate 35˚ and extend out to load and offload military
equipment such as the M1 Tank.
The students also were able to see a winch system
OGI is
well noted for in the marine defense world that lowers
and raises ship anchors. This “Windlasses” system is used
on the majority, if not all, of Naval ships.
The tour then moved on to the mining equipment
area where the students got to see different equipment used
in gold, diamond, zinc,
copper, etc. mines. Equipment
included drilling rigs, hoist systems, and mining trucks. The
students also got to see a drilling rig that had been in a mine
for 6 months and was in to be refurbished and fixed.
Our tour finished with a viewing of the shipping,
receiving and
parts areas, and then into the electrical
assembly area. What a great experience for our students and
our appreciation goes out to the Oldenburg Group and Fritz
Wenzel for allowing us to tour their facility.
Before returning to Laona, we stopped by Scott’s
Subs for pizza and soda. The students
were perfect adults
throughout this trip and conducted themselves in a manner
that future field trips will be welcomed again at the Oldenburg
Group facility in Iron River, MI.

Student
of the
Week
Tanesha
Burba-
Pospichal
This week’s student of the week for March 23-27
is Tanesha Burba- Pospichal. Tanesha was nominated for
this award by Mr. McCann of the Social Studies
Department. Tanesha is well deserving of this nomination
because her knowledge of the content area is
astounding. Over many years of teaching history, it is
rare
to find a female student that has as much passion for the
subject as Tanesha has. Her work and tests scores reflect
this passion. Tanesha has also brought in family items to
show and share pertaining to WWII. Due to all these
reasons, Tanesha has been selected as the
student of the
week.
Tanesha is the daughter of John and Linda
Hatfield and resides in Wabeno. Tanesha has a little
sister named Takara. Her favorite relative is her grandma
because they are very “similar”. Outside of school,
Tanesha likes to go over to her friend’s houses and hang
out.
Her favorite color is blue and her favorite song is
“Bright” by Echosmith. After high school, Tanesha wants
to join the National Guard and someday move on to a
civilian career in the medical field. Lastly, he would like to
thank everyone because each person you meet in life
impacts you
in some way, just more than others. Thank
You Tanesha, and good luck with your future endeavors!
