A deed is a record of ownership for a piece of real estate such as land or a
home. They are kept in the Land Records Department. Every Maryland
County and Baltimore City has a Land Records Department located in that
county’s circuit court. Deeds and other documents stored in land records
are open to the public. There are two ways to get a copy of your deed.
Either get your deed online or pick up a copy in person at the circuit
court.
Get Your Deed Online
Deeds and most other documents kept by the Land Records
Department are available through mdlandrec.net. This website is free to use but you must create an
account using your name and email address.
Search for your deed by first selecting the county where the property is located. Then select “individual
search.” Type in your first and last name, and press search. You will see a list of properties bought and
sold by people with that name.
Click on the word “deed” in the middle of the page to view a PDF. If there are a lot of search results,
try sorting the list by the date the deed was issued. Sometimes, you can also check the street address
associated with the deed.
The website will show you documents other than just deeds. The Land Records Department keeps
many different records that concern property. You are free to view and print any of these documents.
Pick Up a Copy of Your Deed in the Circuit Court
Go to the circuit court in the Maryland county where the property is located. A list of court address and
phone numbers is at mdcourts.gov/courtsdirectory.
Once inside the courthouse, proceed to the Land Records Department. Tell the clerk that you need a
copy of your deed.
Some courthouses may also have a computer terminal where you can look for the deed yourself.
You may request a copy of the deed and other documents from the Land Records Department. You will
be charged a fee based on the number of pages.
