Managing Antibiotic-Induced
Diarrhea
FortiFlora
®
is here to help
Gastrointestinal tract conditions such as diarrhea
are commonly seen in dogs and cats are often
associated with an imbalance in the intestinal
microflora. Many factors can negatively aect
the balance of intestinal bacteria. The use of
broad-spectrum antibiotics (commonly used
to treat infections) causes a disturbance in
intestinal microbiota.
SAFETY STUDIES:
REMEMBER - Safety Studies must be conducted on potential probiotics
to prove that the probiotic does not acquire unnatural antibiotic resistance
(i.e. become resistant to the effects of drugs), does not transmit antibiotic
resistance to other microbiota, nor produce harmful products. Stability studies
must prove that the probiotic survives through typical manufacturing,
shipping and storage conditions.

FortiFlora
®
with probiotic strain SF68
®
has been shown to improve
poor fecal quality associated with microbiota imbalances, stress,
antibiotic therapy or diet change. This probiotic has been shown to be
safe, stable and eective in promoting normal intestinal health and
balance, as well as promoting a strong immune system.

Beer Together
n This study showed that it is beneficial to use metronidazole and
Enterococcus faecium SF68
®
(found only in FortiFlora
®
) together to
manage dogs with nonspecific diarrhea. It was shown that dogs given
FortiFlora
®
in addition to metronidazole showed improvement in just
2.8 days, as oppose to 4.4 days for dogs on metronidazole alone.
4
n SF68
®
is not susceptible to metronidazole therefore the 2 agents can
be administered concurrently.

Supplement use with
Amoxicillin-Clavulanate
n The results showed administering amoxicillin-clavulanate orally
to cats commonly induces diarrhea and alters the gastrointestinal
microbiome, and that feeding the probiotic SF68
®
(found only in
FortiFlora
®
) can lessen some associated clinical abnormalities.
