must document one creditable year of teaching experience in the subject being taught or a closely
related field.

One point for each year of teaching experience at the secondary level in the

Closely Related Fields - This list is not exhaustive and school districts may consider additional fields but must maintain documentation to support
the determination. Additionally, one foreign language is not closely related to another foreign language.

*If using the elementary HOUSSE option for documenting the nine points for meeting the standard for elementary
“highly qualified”, the teacher MAY NOT count the same college coursework or professional development for
meeting the elementary HOUSSE option A and secondary special education HOUSSE.
**If using elementary teaching experience under the elementary HOUSSE option A for documenting the nine
points for meeting the standards for elementary “highly qualified” the teacher may only count a maximum of 12
years of teaching experience in any combination under this HOUSSE option.
***Districts MAY allow six points of college coursework or professional development for special education
strategies or modifications courses or trainings.
